When Maguire was finished, her blood still boiled. Nothing had changed. She stalked over to the campfire and dropped the heart into the flames. “I have fulfilled the promise, moi drug.” She dropped to her knees. “Father Tim, please forgive me.”
Chapter Seventeen
The first day Maguire was gone, no one talked about it. It was clearly thought about, as exhibited by Prescott’s occasional frustrated sighs, but no one said anything. In fact, all conversation was kept to a minimum as they moved under the cover of darkness to make it to their next camping destination.
They had settled into a higher area where mountainous rocks and dense foliage camouflaged them. They’d had another bland MRE dinner. The food didn’t fill them up, but it was sustenance. They were saving their larger meal for just before they started out again.
They were sitting around the tents as the sun came up, each lost in her own thoughts. Baumer was sure that Maguire could track them, if she survived, but wanted to ensure the resourceful staff sergeant found them, in the event something unforeseeable took them off course. She knew Maguire would follow the ATV tracks but if, God forbid, they were killed or taken hostage, she wanted a means of warning Maguire she might be walking into a trap.
“We need to leave markers,” she said suddenly.
“For what?” Prescott asked.
“Maguire.” Baumer explained her plan to the group.
“Do you honestly think we’ll ever see her again?” Prescott growled.
“If I didn’t, I wouldn’t waste my breath or my time talking about it,” Baumer snapped. She ran her hand through her dirty hair, wistfully wishing for a shower and soap. “Jesus, Prescott, your constant grousing about Maguire and Anna is really getting on my nerves. You used to play well with others. What the hell happened to you?”
The three others stared at the normally congenial Baumer, who had not lost her cool until that moment.
Prescott looked like she was about to bite Baumer’s head off. “You know damned well what happened to me!”
“I’m sorry about Nancy and Bethany, but we all lost loved ones! Every one of us here, including Maguire, and we all just lost Szabo! I’m tired of the attitude, Prescott. Could you just give us all a break?”
Baumer knew she needed to stop. She had already said too much and Prescott’s expression indicated that she agreed.
“Fine!” Prescott stood up. “I’ll give you a break. I’ll take first watch.” She checked her weapon for ammunition. Before she walked to her lookout position, she said, “If Maguire is so all that, she won’t need us to play Hansel and Gretel so she can find her way here. Just keep in mind that we could be leading others to us, too.” Prescott spun on her heel and moved to her post.
Baumer watched her stomp off and then looked at Doc and Anna. “Sorry. I guess I’m just tired.”
“I think you’re allowed,” Doc said. “A little bit of her can go a long way.”
Baumer immediately became defensive. Even though she knew Doc was right, Baumer didn’t want anyone else criticizing her people.
